Mindful Stitching

Facilitator: Ruth Hingston

Explore mindfulness through the rhythms of simple stitching, following the breath while exploring a piece of cloth with a needle and thread. We will draw from Japanese and Indian stitch traditions, darning and mending processes, in developing other aspects of mindfulness practices.

No sewing experience is needed. This is not a sewing class, but a facilitated meditative process using hand stitching as a form of mindfulness, under the guidance of a textile artist and long-time meditator.

Basic sewing materials will be provided.

Please note the date change – now 3 weeks, starting 19 November, instead of the originally planned 4 weeks. Wednesdays 10am -12pm
Date/time doesn’t work for you? We will be running this again in 2026. Please register your interest here >>

This three-week program invites you to let go of outcomes and expectations, take the pressure off, and simply enjoy the process of working intuitively with fabric and thread.

Each week offers a different meditative focus using a simple piece of fabric. The sessions combine guided meditation, mindful movement, and stitching—somewhat like walking meditation or meditative drawing, but with needle and thread. You’ll move between quiet personal focus and shared connection with others.

No sewing experience is needed. This is not a sewing class, but a facilitated meditative process using hand stitching as a form of mindfulness.

Basic sewing materials will be provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own if you have them.

The session includes a morning tea break, with tea, coffee, and milk provided.

About Ruth

Ruth Hingston is a textile artist and long-time meditator. She first came to know of Simply Mindful through the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction  (MBSR) program in 2015 and wished she'd known about it earlier. She has been  integrating mindfulness into her life ever since and has often participated in the Simply Mindful graduate practice group. In lockdown when the practice group was online, she created 'Zooming Mindfully'. Ruth made a series of embroidery squares of participants which were used to make a digital video. This was exhibited at the Gathering Place in the Mindful Community Art Exhibition in February 2024. She finds the practice of mindfulness particularly lends itself to the process of stitching and would love to share the joy of stitching mindfully, letting go of outcomes and expectations and working intuitively. Ruth also has a Masters in Visual Arts and Textiles and a Grad Diploma in Adult Education. You can see some of Ruth's work here: https://hingstonbrook.com/embroidery
